it's now time
About 25 years ago, I read The Power of Now for the first time. Monday, I heard darling Eckhart Tolle in person for the first time. Same message: be in THIS moment, since that's all there is.
Eckhart shares plenty of pithy sayings to point that direction, but this seems especially poignant:
Time is what keeps the light from reaching us.
There is no greater obstacle to God than time…
Not only does our perception of time block our awareness of Big Love, but as a linear, sequential event, time's not even a thing. Some pretty brawny brains agree:
The idea that time is something real is an illusion.
It is not a fundamental part of the universe.
Werner Heisenberg
The distinction between past, present,
and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.
Albert Einstein
Kelly, I don't have time for all this physics/philosophical stuff! Why are you perseverating on time? Because: whenever we are unhappy, it has to do with parking ourselves in the past (regretting, victiming, etc.), or distressing over the future (what-iffing, catastrophizing, etc.).
Test for yourself. Next time you're in a less-than-happy mental state, get curious about the thoughts you were just thinking (without the thought, there's not the feeling). You'll probably be surprised!
