story-whacked

What she heard:

“You’re just as ugly as you used to be.”

What he said:

“You’re just as lovely as you used to be.”

Insult or compliment?

We've all whacked ourselves with a "story."  We let our left brain auto-generate explanations for why things happen and create what it considers a linear, logical narrative.  And we've stuck to that story like a dog guarding a bone.  Even if it's wrong.

How can we stop that pointless pain?  The best first-step I've found is to notice The Blip (that feeling of offense, anger, suffering), and get curious about it.  Actually stop and ask ourselves if that's really, absolutely, certainly true.  There's a crazy power in eliminating the tsunami with just that bit of awareness.  Sometimes, we can even laugh at ourselves, which always improves the moment.

As a reminder to laugh, enjoy basking in this most delightful story-whacker of all time,
Roseanne Roseannadanna.
